Top Job Interview Questions for Insurance Salespeople

Top Job Interview Questions for Insurance SalespeopleTop Job Interview Questions for Insurance SalespeopleThe key to landing any job is to prepare to answer questions that are likely to come up during the application process. If youre interviewing for a job as an insurance abverkaufperson, that means being ready to talk about your sales technique and to demonstrate knowledge of the industry and the company. All job interviews are at least partly a sales pitch, but sales jobs are doubly so. You can expect to be required to display your skills by closing the sale, so to speak. This is your opportunity not only to show off your acumen and familiarity with the job, but also to demonstrate how youd interact with clients and colleagues. The more you can find out about the company culture before the interview, the better youll be able to show that youre a good fit for the team. Some organizations may push their salespeople to be more aggressive, for example, or they may prize sellers who de monstrate a high degree of skill with sales management software. If you can learn more about the challenges facing the organization before you head in to the interview, you can make a better case for yourself as the candidate who will solve their problems. Background, Strengths, and Experience Your prospective employer will want to know a lot about your background and experience. Expect to answer questions about cold calling, meeting sales goals, your motivation and passion for the job, and your strengths and weaknesses. The interviewer will also want to know what to expect out of you as a worker. Their aim will be to determine whether youre likely to be successful as a member of the team and organization. Be prepared to answer questions about what youve done in the past. A few examples How would you meet your quotas or bring in sales? How long would you expect to stay in sales if hired? How do you organize, plan, and prioritize your work as a salesman? Theyll probably want to kno w why you personally are suited for a sales environment and how much time you would ideally spend in an office. Again, its important to know what will be required in this particular job. You may also be asked to rate how trainable you are and what you think youre worth. Be prepared to discuss the contributions to profits that youve made to justify your salary request. Finally, your interviewer may even ask if youve ever been fired. Be honest, especially if it was in the recent past and theyll likely find out. Be prepared to share your side of the story without dwelling on the past. Disclose how youve learned from the experience and grown into a better employee. Industry Knowledge Knowing your industry will make you a much better salesperson than if youre clueless about the insurance field. With this in mind, expect your interviewer to ask you questions such as, Which drivers will influence the market in the next 18 months? The interviewer might also expect you to know informatio n specifically about the company in question. For example, What do you think is a typical day in the life of an insurance salesman at the company? Be sure to study up on the company and say why you want to work there. You might also be asked to critique the company. But dont go overboard here. You want your criticism to be as constructive as possible. Maybe mention some areas in which the company could improve and how youre the right person to do so. Communication and Interpersonal Skills Working in insurance sales means that you have to be an effective communicator. That means interviewers will want to know if you can distinguish communication skills from listening skills. Theyll also be likely to ask how you build relationships with clients and handle rejection. Be ready to share an experience you had dealing with a difficult customer and how you handled the situation. And if youre a good communicator, youre likely to enjoy cold calling, so be prepared to discuss that. Your pr ospective employer might also want you to share an effective method you have used to sell insurance. Lastly, be ready for curveballs. For example, its not uncommon for interviewers to ask candidates to sell them something in 60 seconds or less, e.g., Sell me this pen. Practice demonstrating your sales technique so that you can impress when the time comes.

Otzu sichs will be looking for the compensation they should have been getting after taking on the work their ex-colleagues were doing before they were pink-slipped.Surprisingly, many employers may be ready to accommodate these changes, according to a recent survey by CareerBuilder.com and staffing firm Robert Half. Among the findingsNearly half of the 500+ full-time employees surveyed said mora money will be the most effective way for employers to make them happy after the economy improves.Almost as many hiring managers recognize that 40% of hi ring managers in the survey said providing more money will be their primary method for retaining top performers when the rebound begins. In a bit of a surprise given the large labor pool, 6 out of 10 hiring managers said their companies are willing to negotiate higher compensation for qualified candidates.Depending on your current status, heres what this might mean to youEMPLOYED BUT LOOKING? How mindfulness, minus the hype, benefits your brain and mood

How mindfulness, minus the hype, benefits your brain and mood How mindfulness, minus the hype, benefits your brain and mood Mindfulness is rapidly becoming a global phenomenon. It’s even supported by rigorous scientific research, driven in part by a desire for new practices to improve our mental health. Mental disorders will be the biggest burden of disease in developed countries by 2030, according to The World Health Organisation. The need for prevention strategies is now more important than ever. When you strip away the mysticism, mindfulness has a positive influence on the brain. Follow Ladders on Flipboard! Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!   A study from Dr. Sara W. Lazar, et al., showed that meditation actually increases brain density in the prefrontal cortex. “In essence, mindfulness?- ?being about attention, awareness, relationality, and caring?- ?is a universal human capacity akin to our capacity for language acquisition,” writes Brigid Delaney of The Guardian. Modern mindfulness is probably the easiest thing in the world, and the hardest thing for your brain, even if you do it for just five minutes a day. The simple idea of being mindful?- ?being present, being more conscious of life as it happens, and being aware of your environment can help you enjoy life to the fullest. Even things you might think are boring, like tidying up, can be amazing if you are truly present. It takes practice, but it’s incredible. Mark Williams, co-author of Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World encourages us to live in the moment every day. He writes, “Start living right here, in each present moment. When we stop dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, we’re open to rich sources of information we’ve been missing out on?- ?information that can keep us out of the downward spiral and poised for a richer life.” Mindfulness aims to achieve a relaxed, non-judgmental awareness of your present thoughts, feelings and emotions. The simple act of making your actions deliberate, not rushed and random can improve your mood and help you focus better. Mark Williams, professor of clinical psychology at the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, part of Oxford University’s department of psychiatry, calls it “direct knowledge of what is going on inside and outside ourselves, moment by moment”. The life-changing habit is about learning to direct our attention to our experiences as they unfold, instead of choosing to “live in our heads”. It’s about noticing our thoughts, especially when they are taking over, and realising that they are simply ‘mental events’ that do not have to control our emotions. In his TED Talk All It Takes Is 10 Mindful Minutes, mindfulness expert and Founder of Headspace, Andy Puddicombe, explains, “… Not being lost in thought, not being distracted, not being overwhelmed by difficult emotions but instead learning how to be in the here and now; how to be mindful, how to be present. I think the present moment is so underrated. It sounds so ordinary and yet we spend so little time in the present moment that it’s anything but ordinary.” Mindfulness has been reported to produce positive effects on psychological well-being that extend beyond the time the individual is formally meditating. Parts of your brain associated with compassion and self-awareness grows while parts associated with stress shrink when you meditate, according to research from Massachusetts General Hospital. The study looked at brain scans of people before and after they participated in a course on mindfulness meditation. Studies report that meditation can “permanently rewire” your brain to raise levels of happiness. “In the past decade, research has shown that the benefits of mindfulness include: stress reduction, improved concentration, boosts to working memory, reduced rumination, less emotional reactivity, more cognitive flexibility, a higher level of relationship satisfaction, etc.” writes Christopher Bergland of Psychology Today. Make time (even if it’s just two minutes a day) to meditate. Find a quiet place and focus on your breathing?- ?and nothing else?- ?for at least two minutes each day. In our distracted world, this can be hard but it’s not impossible. If you do it successfully, and consistently make it a habit, you’ll sleep better, feel less stressed, and have more energy. Every activity in life can be a trigger to bring you back to the present  moment In our distracted world, it is essential for your wellbeing to take a few minutes each day to cultivate mental spaciousness and achieve a positive mind-body balance. This can be hard but it’s not impossible. In fact, simple focused breathing can do wonders for you in any situation. And breathing isn’t the only exercise you can do to reset your mind. Try observing, listening, and appreciating more intentionally, too. You can be more present in your morning routine, how you work, take breaks and or even how you engage with your spouse, children or relatives. Being mindful every day can completely change how you relate with yourself, others, and your work. If you do it successfully, and consistently make it a habit, you’ll sleep better, feel less stressed, and have more energy. So how do you embrace mindfulness, in the simplest way possible? It starts with an awareness habit. Begin to notice the world around you. Awaken your senses to the world around you. Our brains are on auto-pilot most of the time. Take charge of your thinking habits by switching off the auto-pilot. Slow down your thinking. Become aware of your thoughts. Become comfortable with the silence and stillness. Most experts recommend a formal practice of mindfulness for about 15 minutes every day. But that will be hard for a wandering mind. Training your mind to filter the noise in your head to observe is tough. Naturally, it’s not easy to clear your mind of all thought. Anyone who has tried to meditate knows how hard it is when the mind keeps wandering into thoughts, from trivial to life-changing. Attention is a precious commodity, yet we give it away most freely. And struggle to find it when we need it most. What you could do is start slow. Develop one habit at a time. There are dozens of daily mindful habits you can adopt. You can embrace journaling, or practice gratitude daily. Start noticing the environment (just take notice of what’s going on). Take time(a minute or two) to breathe deeply; Feel the rush of fresh, oxygenated blood fill you with renewed life. Don’t rush it. You can use the 4â€"7â€"8 breathing technique; Breathe in for four seconds. Hold your breath for seven seconds. Exhale for eight seconds. Repeat. It’s simple enough to keep your mind occupied with counting and simple enough to practice mindfulness. Reduce the noise by turning off your gadgets for a couple of hours. You will get used to it after a while. I have turned off all notifications on my life, and I have never gone back. Listen more instead of talking. Offer your undivided attention in a conversation. Read more. Reading can trigger some of the same effects as meditation: a slowing of thoughts and calming of the mind. Pat attention to your gut. Start listening and trusting your intuition. Again, you don’t have to start these habits at the same time. You can start with just one and measure the results every week. Over time and with practice, you will learn new pathways to better habits for a peaceful mind. Mindfulness is a chance to snap out of unhealthy mental habits and behaviours that can be counterproductive. The next time you find yourself dwelling on something that is stressing or depressing you, stop and breathe. Think about your thinking. And then guide your attention to the present. Whats changed for American workers since last years tax reform

What's changed for American workers since last year's tax reform What's changed for American workers since last year's tax reform When Congress passed a $1.5 trillion tax overhaul last year, supporters justified major corporate tax cuts by claiming the money companies saved would trickle down to America’s workers. It’s still too soon to tell whether that theory will prove accurate. But there are some data points that indicate how the economy is trending almost a year after the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was signed into law. Here’s what’s happened for U.S. employees since tax reform nearly one year ago.Salary bumps750 companies have proposed to use the money they’ve saved through tax cuts to benefit their employees, whether through bonuses, raises, or other methods. Already, some workers have seen more green in their bank account because of the law.Just Capital, a nonprofit monitoring how 1,000 large companies are spending their tax cuts, estimates an average employee at one of those businesses has seen a bump of around $225 this year that’s linked to the act, according to the New York Times. The Labor Depa rtment announced inflation-adjusted wages were up by 0.5% in September.   But that growth is actually lower than in 2017, before tax reform was enacted.Hirings and firingsThe unemployment rate has been steadily  declining since 2011 (from a high near 10%)  when the economy started recovering from 2008’s Great Recession. The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the U.S. unemployment rate was 3.7% in October 2018, and 250,000 jobs were created during that month. However, Just Capital discovered a surprising nuance within the booming economy: The large public businesses they study have created 73,000 jobs but also gotten rid of nearly double that number. Some of these trends may not be a direct result of the tax cuts, which take time to manifest fully. Correlation does not imply causation, and the U.S. economy is privy to a lot of factors beyond tax reform that influence its success or failure. But for now, these are the takeaways American workers can infer from preliminary data ab out the tax cuts and what they mean for them. Now, it’s time to get up the gumption to ask for that raise - even $225 more a year can make a difference.

3 ways to prepare so you can ace your next job interview

3 ways to prepare so you can ace your next job interview 3 ways to prepare so you can ace your next job interview So, you are thinking it’s time to leave your current job to see if there is something that fits you better. Maybe you want to leave because you have a manager that makes too little time for you, doesn’t encourage your learning and development, doesn’t provide meaningful feedback or is cheap with praise when you do good work. Maybe you have grown as far as you can grow in the organization because the path for advancement will move you from your high-performance abilities to those that are out of your high-performance areas. Or, maybe you’re just ready for a change.Regardless of the reason, it’s important to prepare for your future interview. Remember that an interview is an information-gathering-and-sharing event. You share information about yourself and gather information about the possible employer. When done well, both sides have enough of the right information to determine if the role fits both of you.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard c overing Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Consider these three tips to fully prepare yourself to ace your interview.Invest in greater self-awareness to know your strengths, interests, and valuesThe interview is your opportunity to share who you are. This requires great self-knowledge, so take the time to really understand and articulate what you do well, your interests and what activates your best performance. You can’t wisely assess whether you have what it takes to succeed in the role if you are unaware of your abilities. Consider taking an assessment, doing self-discovery work or working with a coach to get clear about who you are. This will also help you identify the right-fit job opportunities, ensuring your time is well spent at the interview.Create a list of what you want the organization to know about youThough all organizations interview, there are few that are effective or good at it. That means it’s extremely likely you may leave the in terview without having shared the critical and important information they need to know about you to wisely consider you for the role. Gaining greater self-awareness (refer back to step 1) gives you greater clarity about your success attributes, attributes that are critical to share during your interview.Don’t leave the interview until you share these attributes. You may even have to say something like, “I wanted to share the three things about me (my three greatest abilities) that will show how I can add value and make a difference in this role. Would now be a good time to share these with you?” Be prepared to share your greatest attributes during your interview, even if your interviewer hasn’t asked for them.Create a list of what you want to know about the organization, role or managerUnderstand the organization and its focus, vision, and mission. Understand the role, what it does and its importance to the organization, and get an understanding of the management style and c ulture of the organization. Create a list of anything you need to know to be able to say yes or no to the opportunity.Since an interview is an information-gathering-and-sharing event, take the time to really know yourself so you can be clear about what information you want your potential future employer to know about you, even if they forget to ask. Also, know what information you need to discover or confirm about them and, based on your self-awareness, know what you’re looking for in an organization â€" and the job â€" that needs to be met for you to say “yes” to the job. The goal is to have enough of the right information to assess whether you fit them and they fit you. Do your homework. How One Company Is Helping GED Students Find the Jobs They Want

How One Company Is Helping GED Students Find the Jobs They Want How One Company Is Helping GED Students Find the Jobs They Want The problem, however, is that only 43 percent of these students actually go on to enroll in postsecondary education programs, and a scant 12 percent actually complete those postsecondary programs. Aaron Michel, cofounder and CEO of career navigation and education software provider PathSource, believes these low enrollment and graduation rates can be partially attributed to a lack of information. That is, GED students dont often receive  much guidance once theyve passed the test. If they want to continue their education, they generally have to take it into their own hands to find postsecondary programs that work for them. How can you choose the best direction in life if you dont know what all your options are? asks Michel. How can you reach your destination if you dont know where you’re going? PathSource has recently teamed up with the GED Testing Service in an effort to rectify this situation, and so far, Michel says, the results have been great. A Diplomas Not What It Used to Be According to Michel, this is the real core of the problem: todays diplomas just arent connected to the 21st century workforce. Theres this gap where all these GED students want to have better lives, and they want to go on to postsecondary education, but they dont know exactly what they want to do or how to get there, Michel explains. Thats the gap that we were brought in to fill. PathSource aims to connect GED students directly to the modern workforce through a suite of career exploration tools. Every person who registers for the GED now will get full access to PathSources tools, Michel says. The PathSource suite comprises a number of tools, most notably a video library of informational interviews and a career assessment that exposes students to potential career paths. Michel calls PathSources video library, which contains more than 3,000 videos, the worlds largest library of informational interviews on video. The idea here is that students can log into the platform and browse through these videos to learn  about different career paths directly from the professionals who have walked them. PathSource also offers a career assessment that uses a students interests to generate a list of career recommendations. Students can then explore each recommendation further by watching videos and exploring PathSources wide range of  career data. We want this test to be more than just a test. We want this to be a bridge to a better future, Michel says. They made the test more rigorous, and they connected it with the 21st  century workforce through a career exploration process. So Far, So Good The PathSource/GED partnership was officially implemented on September 29 not even  a month ago just yet and Michel says hes been hearing great feedback. I visited an adult education center right after we went live in Richmond, CA, Michel says. I talked with a number of staff and students, and everyone was really positive about it. I actually ran a few students through the process, and they said it was really invaluable. They didnt know where they wanted to go, and using this, they could make sure life didn’t just happen to them. When talking about his experience at the adult education center, Michel zeros in on one student in particular. One woman took the career assessment, and she decided she needed to take it again because she had taken it as who she is today, but she wanted to take it as who she wanted to be tomorrow, Michel says. It was very powerful to see that. PathSource: Not Just for GED Students While PathSource is doing great work with GED students right now, I feel its important to note that these students  arent the only ones who can take advantage of PathSources career exploration tools. College students, recent grads, and even established members of the workforce looking for new career options can benefit from PathSources  app and Web portal. Very, very few people choose the right career on their first try; some estimates peg that number as low as 5 percent. Basically, the other 95 percent are miserable, Michel says with a bit of grim humor. [Finding the right career]  is a huge, screaming problem for people across the board, across education levels, across the socioeconomic spectrum. So, if youre one of the 95 percent, you may want to check out PathSource.

6 great college football (and foodie) towns to visit this fall

6 great college football (and foodie) towns to visit this fall 6 great college football (and foodie) towns to visit this fall School’s back in session and so is college football. We’ve helped tackle the question of where to go to catch a great college football game and score great restaurants and sites while in the destination.Tallahassee, FL â€" Florida State UniversityWhen most people think of Tallahassee a few thoughts immediately come to mind; Florida State, Garnet Gold, Tomahawk chop, Seminoles - of course, the state capital. But college football is the main priority in this southern town.Pre-game festivities begin on Friday with not one, but TWO block parties, the original Downtown Get Down and CollegeTown’s Friday Night Block Party - both providing live entertainment, ice cold beverages, and vendors, both are also perfectly located near restaurants and great happy hour spots.Restaurants to try include Madison Social for Doak Campbell Stadium views and centered in the heart of the action; and Momos for huge pizza slices and Edison for the more refined dinner. DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Tallah assee serves as the ideal overnight accommodations for football weekends, near the stadium and centered between downtown, CollegeTown and Midtown’s nightlife and restaurants. Beyond football, the destination has 600 miles of trails, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts looking to burn off tailgating calories.Chapel Hill, NC â€" University of North CarolinaWhile UNC fans and alumni relate Chapel Hill to fond sports memories and Carolina Blue, the charming southern city is home to more than just Tar Heel Nation. While the UNC sports teams bring tons of excitement to the otherwise small town, there are also many other attractions, monuments, and activities to enjoy when visiting Chapel Hill, NC.Whether in town for a big game or looking for a quick staycation, The Carolina Inn, A Destination Hotel has remained top of mind for residents and travelers, alike. Originally built in 1924 by University of North Carolina Chapel Hill alumnus John Sprunt Hill and designed by award-winning architect Arthur C. Nash, The Carolina Inn depicts pure elegance and historical charm with 185 beautifully appointed guest rooms, including seven luxury suites. The signature restaurant, Crossroads Chapel Hill, led by Executive Chef Brandon Sharp, a fellow Chapel Hill alumnus, offers guests a contemporary dining experience for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Carolina Inn is the only property set on UNC’s campus placing guests a short walk away from all university destinations and Franklin Street and only 20 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport.Chapel Hill offers an unforgettable escape into a history that goes back to the 18th century, when UNC-Chapel Hill opened its doors as the first state-supported university in the country. Visitors get a glimpse into the city’s more artistic side from the Ackland Art Museum, home to more than 18 thousand works of art spanning different decades and mediums. Chapel Hill is also home to the largest full-dome planetarium in the southeaster n U.S. (Morehead Planetarium Science Center) and a 1,000-acre Botanical Garden that houses 10 acres of display gardens and hundreds of acres showcasing the state’s native plants and vegetation. Named “America’s Foodiest Small Town” by Bon Appetit and home to more than 200 restaurants, bars, and retail shops â€" many of which can be found on the Historic Franklin Street â€" Chapel Hill is also dedicated to serving up farm-fresh food with a southern flair.Austin, TX â€" University of TexasAustin is one of the greatest American cities, and college football season is arguably the best time to be in town: the temperatures are near perfect (Texas fall is the best), and the city is vibrant with music and events. Before or after the game, get in the Texas mood by donning some famous Allens Boots from “boots-to-borrow” program at the Aloft/Element Austin Downtown. Next, head down to Ladybird lake for a morning stand-up paddle board session with city view and then grab a bite at Austin’s famous Barbeque joint, Franklin Barbecue. In the evening, head out to one of Austin’s famous entertainment districts, from the dive-bar centric party scene of 6th Street to the lively backyard bars of Rainey Street. Live music is everywhere.Plan to visit Upstairs at Caroline, Austin’s premier urban backyard party. It’s one of the area’s hottest football bars and lounges, as well as just a place where locals love to hang out and play year-round. It has a beautiful indoor/outdoor bar complete with TV’s, outdoor lawn games and views. So, whether it’s before or after the game, guests will be in the right place. Also, guests will be a quick Uber from the stadium, so no need to waste time in Austin traffic getting to and from.Settle in at the Westin Austin Downtown, located in the heart of Austin, and the lobby and meeting space draw design inspiration from the guitar (the lobby ceiling and vertical garden mimic the cutouts of a Dobro guitar, while the ballroom floors allude to prints often found on guitar straps). The y’ve also been receiving rave reviews for their restaurant, Stella San Jac, and have the highest rooftop pool in all of Austin. It’s a hip spot to be.State College, PA â€" Penn State UniversityPenn State University is synonymous with college football at this point â€" the football powerhouse has a legendary record, with the Nittany Lions starting rank at #10 for the 2018 season. Few fans, however, realize that there is more to do and see in State College than just Penn State. Featuring small town charm meets metropolitan amenities and one of the nation’s largest universities, the region is surrounded by some of the country’s top outdoor hiking, biking, and fly-fishing experiences.Visitors can check out the natural wonders of Penn’s Cave, the country’s only all-water cavern, the unassuming Columbus Chapel, which houses the most significant collection of Christopher Columbus artifacts in North America, and the Central PA Tasting Trail, featuring a growing selection of craf t breweries, distilleries, wineries, and cideries. Visitors will find a variety of accommodations from hotels and inns like The Nittany Lion (named after the college’s mascot) and Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, as well as breathtaking bed breakfasts, lodges, and vacation rentals. And no visit to Central PA would be complete without a visit to Original Waffle Shop, buttery grilled stickies at Ye Olde College Diner, or ice cream at Berkey Creamery (try the Lion S’more!).Madison, WI â€" University of WisconsinIf you’re in Madison on game day, find your best Badger gear and join the festivities! Camp Randall is home to the perennial powerhouse University of Wisconsin Badgers football team, and going to a game makes it easy to see why USA Today ranked Madison #1 on its list of “America’s Best College Football Towns.” Between the third and fourth quarters, it’s time to “Jump Around!” This college game day tradition is considered one of the best when 80,000 fans (and the play ers!) literally jump as the loudspeaker plays House of Pain’s 1990s hit. While the football game ends after four quarters, the fun really starts with the kickoff of the famous Fifth Quarter, a music-filled party right on the field featuring the UW Marching Band. Following a thrilling game, stroll down State Street, the iconic pedestrian walkway connecting the Capitol building to UW-Madison. You’ll come across sports bars filled with football fans watching other college football action, restaurants featuring aromas and flavors from around the world, and if you want to indulge your cultural side, there are several free museums, boutique shops with Wisconsin originals, and music and comedy venues. If you’re looking to be the king or queen of tailgating, get an early start on Saturday morning and visit the Dane County Farmers Market. It is the nation’s largest producers-only farmers market with vendors displaying impressive autumn harvests, and offering plenty of apple and pumpki n baked goods to fill your belly before the game.Looking to see more Madison sights? Take advantage of Madison BCycle, an urban bike share program, and cruise around the isthmus for the day, checking out the Capitol Square, the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace, and some of Madison’s many eclectic neighborhoods. For a nature-inspired afternoon, take in the fall colors at the UW Arboretum, walk the beautiful Lakeshore Path along Lake Mendota, or enjoy both indoor and outdoor displays at the Olbrich Botanical Gardens. When it’s time to wind down, rest your head at HotelRED, just steps from Camp Randall or Graduate Madison, a boutique hotel located just a block from the university. Try out both hotel restaurants, The Wise and Camp Trippalindee, respectively, for delicious fare, classic cocktails, and tasty Wisconsin brews.

Networking and Asking for Online Recommendations

Networking and Asking for Online Recommendations Networking and Asking for Online Recommendations It’s a tried and true piece of advice from career counselors everywhere: Network, network, network. Depending on who you ask, 70 to 80 percent of jobs are found through networking. And part of networking is the act of asking for recommendations to add to your professional portfolio. These days, professionals use online recommendations through websites like LinkedIn, but it’s still important to go about getting those recommendations in the proper way. Thanks to a recent article on Mashable, we can brush up on How to Ask for an Online Recommendation. Asking for online recommendations is very similar to asking for a paper recommendation. Here are some of their tips along with our thoughts. “Plan a recommendation strategy.” You’ll need to get your story straight: Why do you want a recommendation? What are you hoping to achieve? Who might see this recommendation? By telling your would-be recommenders these details, you’re giving them proof that you deserve a recommendation, and you’re helping them figure out how to write your recommendations in ways that will help you achieve your goals. “Selecting the person to ask.” People tend to prefer a personal approach to asking for a recommendation, but it depends on each person. Consider your relationship with them, in terms of how well you know them and how close you are to them. Sometimes e-mail is the most convenient method for everyone, but don’t neglect a nice phone call when it’s possible. If you’re using a website like LinkedIn, they’ll have a process you can use to get recommendations “Balance is the key.” Most people instantly think of their boss or supervisor as a good source for a recommendation, and they’re correct. But you should also include “peers, subordinates and customers or vendors” to help create a full picture of you as a professional. “Volunteerism demonstrates skills.” As we’ve said time and time again, volunteering in an area related to your professional pursuits is a great way to beef up your resume, make connections, and gain experience. AND the people you volunteer with are great sources for recommendations. Here are a few more ideas from : Be grateful and remember to thank EVERYONE that takes the time to write you a recommendation. Create a formal method to keep track of all recommendations. Save them as Word documents in a folder on your computer. Or get permission from your recommenders to add them to LinkedIn or to your professional website/portfolio. Pick and choose which recommendations to use for each job application. Some will be more appropriate than others. Prospective employers do not want to read every nice thing anyone has ever said about you. Instead, give them two to three of your best and most relevant recommendations rather than inundating them with every one you’ve ever received. Ask for touch-ups. Over the years, your closest recommenders might want to change or add to your recommendations. For the folks with whom you are closest, every once and a while ask them if they want to check out your recommendation and add anything. This is especially important for recommenders who you work with on a regular basis, because hopefully you are doing more and more fabulous work for them!

How to Advance Your Career at a Small Company - The Muse

How to Advance Your Career at a Small Company - The Muse How to Advance Your Career at a Small Company When you took a job at a small company, you saw an opportunity to gain resume-enriching experience. As a member of an all-hands-on deck team, there seemed to be no limit to the projects you could take on. After all, a growing company is full of opportunity- right?Sure. But the thing about small companies is that they’re, well- small. So when you’re ready to move up, there’s not always a place to go. You’ve had many opportunities to spread your wings, yet after a while you may find you’ve flown smack into the middle of the sliding glass door.So now what?At this point, you have two options: Stay where you are and make a path of your own, or find a position outside of the company that is more in line with your goals. There are a lot of reasons you might want to stay put- maybe you believe strongly in the company’s mission or you like the culture. Perhaps you see an opportunity to step into a leadership role as the company grows. But whatever the reason, once you decide to stay, prepare to blaze your own trail. Here are some things I had to learn the hard way about forging your own career path.Don’t Just Show Initiative, Take It  Smaller organizations don’t always have structured career paths for their employees, so it’s likely you’ll be responsible for not only meeting your performance goals, but for helping your supervisor to define them, as well.Take advantage of this and be proactive about your role. Don’t wait for management to assign you additional responsibilities. Instead, look around for areas in the organization that need improvement and create solutions. This process will identify areas of opportunity that are beyond your current functional area (some of which may be perfectly suited to your skill set!).An example: Six years ago, I was hired by my current employer to manage administrative operations. After a few weeks in that role, I noticed that one senior executive was handling all of the human resources issues, in addition to his p rimary job functions. I approached him about the possibility of taking on some of his responsibilities. That conversation resulted in the creation what is now my primary role- directing the company’s HR programs and activities under fairly limited supervision.Make it Easy for Them to See What You’re DoingOnce you’ve identified potential areas for growth or projects you can take on, create a career plan with a measurable set of objectives to discuss with your supervisor on a regular basis (and make revisions as your role develops). When you’re forging into new territory, documenting the metrics by which your success will be measured is a favor to both yourself and your boss. But accomplishing your goals is only half of the battle. Remember, The Powers That Be (TPTB) at your company  cannot reward what they cannot see, and from my experience, they sometimes need visual aids. If you want your growth to stay on the agenda, you’ll need to reinforce your efforts by giving them th e right information at the right time.A few years ago, I started a journal to keep track of new processes I’d created and any resulting financial impact they had on the company (remember, management always has an eye on the bottom line, and achievements with no correlation to revenue or savings are unlikely to get much attention). I then shared this with my boss in our monthly status meetings, so that he always had the information he needed to discuss my performance and growth opportunities with the rest of the management team. This additional effort at communication has significantly increased my compensation and my level of influence in a relatively short period of time. The lesson here is this: Set goals, communicate your achievements, and demonstrate how they translate into dollars. Executives understand this language.Find a MentorThere is no better guide to a destination than one who’s already traveled the road. If your company has a formal mentoring program, get involved. I f it doesn’t, look around for someone who’s been there for awhile, and who has accomplished the type of growth you’re looking for. A mentor can see what you can’t- whether it’s an opportunity for improvement, an obstacle within the organization, or the often unspoken expectations of management. My mentor is one of two partners original to our organization. When I first asked him when I’d be eligible for promotion into a director role, he replied, “If you want to be promoted to director, you’ve got to do the job of a director.” In other words, TPTB at my organization expect that you’ll demonstrate the knowledge, skill, ability, and willingness to do the job before they’ll give it to you. That’s valuable information to have.Be RealisticIt’s easy get frustrated when your career doesn’t develop as quickly as you’d hoped. The truth is, no matter how hard you work, or how much you bring to the table, your organization might not be big or profitable enough to j ustify a promotion. If this is the case for you, try not to focus too much on the official promotion. There is more to career development than a change in title and a bigger office. Growth can also be tracked with changes in your pay, responsibilities, and influence. For instance, you may become eligible for an annual bonus, or your salary increases may be more substantial. Or,  you may find that you’re included in discussions regarding strategy and process more so than before. At a small company, having greater influence over its product or services can be more meaningful for your career long-term than a change to the title on your business card.If All Else FailsUltimately, you may find that your personal goals and the company’s available opportunities just don’t align. If this is the case, it may be time to consider moving on. But whether you decide to stay in your current role or seek out another, there is no downside to making the effort to become a more valuable, effective team member. My advice to you? Blaze that trail. It may not get you to where you expected, but it will get you somewhere better.Photo of woman thinking courtesy of Shutterstock.

Getting the Best Resume Work

Getting the Best Resume Work Keeping your resume updated is also a fantastic means to chart your private growth. Resume objectives can be a little controversial. Resume objectives are important since they are typically the very first thing a prospective employer reads. As a result, while your resume objective should incorporate information on the career that you would like, you also wish to spell out why you are the perfect candidate for the job. Make certain it's tailored to not merely the position, but the provider also. Focus on how you would like to grow within the provider. Determine where you see yourself in the organization in five decades and what specific goals you mean to do in your very first year with the organization. Rather than mentioning ways to help your organization succeed, state directly that you are able to help XYZ Company to succeed. Get the Scoop on Resume Work Before You're Too Late In your interview, you will acquire open questions, therefore it's a very good concept to have strong opinions. In various ways, an objective replaces a lot of the detail you would set in your professional experience section. The resume objective statement ought to take the format of a job-focused description of what it's possible to promote the employer. In the majority of instances, a resume objective is simply a couple of sentences long. What You Should Do About Resume Work Starting in the Next Nine Minutes Em ployers like to realize that you have work experience of some type, at least. When you're crafting your resume objective, you should concentrate on particular abilities and experiences which are directly associated with the job. For instance, it might state some of your previous accomplishments, and move on to the sorts of accomplishments you would like to achieve in the future (ideally, accomplishments you wish to achieve for the organization you're applying to work for). Most high school students have a tendency to make an application for a food services position. Whatever They Told You About Resume Work Is Dead Wrong...And Here's Why Without the certification, it is going to be mission impossible to find the job. Keys Skills Under Your Headline The third idea is to place your key skills below your headline. With regard to qualifications, getting the most suitable education and certifications ought to be in your Surgical Tech skills list. First off, we should determine wha t kind of job seeker you're. For instance, if you're in marketing, try and enhance the marketing for a little small business online. Skills-based resumes emphasize your training instead of professional experience, which you might not have already. All our resume templates are in Microsoft Word, that's the simplest program to use. Then, though the database library will call withContext repeatedly, it is going to stay on precisely the same dispatcher and adhere to a fast-path. There are a couple of dozen different resume templates readily available online, but a lot of them suck. If you submit your application online, it's also advisable to have a chance to attach your resume. So make certain your resume is simple to read by making sure there is lots of white space around the text, particularly headings. Sooner or later, everything on your resume needs to contribute to its highest possible relevancy and readability. Entry-level objectives can be particularly hard to write since you likely don't have load s of work experience, but you do want to solidify how you know the kind of career you're searching for. You can obviously cite the job as a chance to create certain abilities and acquire new knowledge but don't portray it like a stepping stone to a different firm. A resume objective that could apply to anybody or any kind of job isn't valuable. A resume objective can explain why you're qualified for the job, even if it's the case that you do not own a lot of related experience. You'll locate a story about someone who said the incorrect thing on social networking and lost her job. The very first thing you ought to do is to place work experience in the center section of your resume. Conversely, should you happen to locate your dream job, obtaining a ready-to-go resume in your back pocket will allow you to jump at the opportunity before it disappears. The words you write needs to be straightforward and simple to read, permitting you to receive your point across. What You Must Know About Resume Work When you attempt to figure out what things to do with your career you require true coaching, therapy. A decent skills list is imperative on any resume for teens. It is often as easy as stating your preferred job title, or it may show where you are, and where you aspire to go in your career. Do not invent a work history that you don't have.
